Review
Wiz: As my partner so
adeptly pointed out in the Innisbrook review, the triumvirate of Florida resorts (Doral, Innisbrook and Sawgrass) share many attributes. Dated exteriors, comfortable if not
palatial rooms, iconic, well maintained courses and top notch service. I am probably being a bit hard on
the exterior appearance. Perhaps a nostalgic feel is their intention. After all, no one would
dare try to update the timeless beauty of ’72 Pinto. The rooms are comfortable and
upscale.
Wiz: I’ve seen the pros play The Blue Monster many times. I am always excited to walk
in the footsteps of the world’s greatest players (and often explore portions of the course they inexplicable
ignore). However, my excitement was quickly tempered when I felt the landing gear from a 737 brush my head
on the first fairway. Evidently, Doral is in the flight path for the Miami airport resulting in a less
than relaxing round. On hole number 8 a Lufthansa flight was so low I had to pay a $25 baggage fee for my
clubs. I met a nice couple from Munich in first class.
10kk: Oh the golf...it was great, typical
South Florida tracks and the Blue Monster, well let's just say it is a landing strip turned into 18
holes.
10kk: My thoughts
took me to South Beach, ... it is almost an hour away from the famed "Blue Monster". If you plan on making
the trek down there with your buddies either don't drink the Patron or get a driver. I remember thinking
as I had my third double Margarita, I didn't want to leave...that was until we got the bill ...I think it was
over $200 for just a couple of drinks (that was to be the whole dinner budget)...O-well...this is South
Beach... As you walk the streets, the bars overflow onto the streets and crazy sights are
everywhere. Budget Bob had a Parrot on his shoulder and we were trying to figure out how to make money
from this crazy venture. If anyone has a job for a Bud Light wielding pirate, I've got just the
guy.
Wiz: The night life
at the resort is rather docile. A night in Miami is a must. A fruity tropical drink at a street side
watering hole with classic hotels clad in colorful neon as a backdrop is quite a treat. Another treat
is the plethora of scantily clad women milling about. Clearly they gaze upon me as they would their father
but on the plus side, I didn’t have slide a single Washington into a
garter.
10kk: I was looking
for something "New and Different" for dining. A restaurant you couldn't find anywhere else....oh, and it
had to cost less than $20. We ended up walking to a Greek place near the end of South Beach ( A looong
walk, btw). The reviews said the place allowed dancing on the tables. Table dancing sounded good and
it was a "Value" pick. Anyway, either we didn't stay long enough for things to get going or it was
over-hyped...cheap food and a few people looking foolish on their tables wasn't what I had in
mind....
Wiz: I believe that
was Taverna Opa. Not one of your memorable
picks. We should have stayed with the parrot. Update-we are not
alone in our lack of enthusiasm for this restaurant. This location is out of
business.
