Review

Wiz: The Homestead is a grand old resort without the stuffed shirt feeling of The Greenbrier.  Greenbrier Lite if you will.  Southern charm and stately ambiance permeate the picturesque hotel.  The resort is steeped in history and boasts a guest list infused with celebrities and dignitaries.

The impetus of the resort is the natural mineral spring that now fills the baths at the spa.  Supposedly soaking in this cocktail mixer is therapeutic.  The 10kk spa package includes a bottle of Jack to add to your “bath water”.

The Homestead is home to the “oldest continuously used tee box in America”.  That's akin to the oldest pair of underwear in the drawer.  You have to admire the longevity but, does it warrant acclaim?  It reminds me of Myrtle Beach- a city so insecure that it continually invents world records to give itself- “Best stretch of highway between Conway and the Atlantic Ocean”, “World’s largest water front gift shop”.

After teeing off on the “oldest continuously used tee box in America”, Mother Nature decided to impinge upon our round by summoning a swarm of gnats to accompany us.  Immobility meant your head would be encircled like the rings of Saturn.  The menace caused Budget Bob to finish the round with a towel draped over his head resulting in a distinct resemblance to Lawrence of Arabia.  10kk found this unacceptable and confronted the manager.  “Sir we cannot control nature, it rains, it snows, there are wild animals and insects that are beyond our control.” responded the befuddled manager.  In response to the initial resistance, 10kk launched a relentless weekend long assault that rivaled D-Day.  Every time I turned around he was on the phone administering the death of a thousand cuts- “I am disappointed that such a fine establishment would care so little for the welfare of it’s guests”.  Fearing that the polite but displeased tenacity could turn into unfavorable internet banter, the manager relented and refunded our green fees.  The Homestead now has a new claim to go with its’ old tee box-“longest campaign for a refund in America”.

Despite Gnat-Gate, I highly recommend The Homestead.  The service was impeccable and the rooms are well appointed.  The nightlife is rather limited but, we did manage to keep ourselves occupied.
